Chapter 79

Settle a Great Grudge and Some Remains

The Text

Settle a great grudge, and some grudge surely remains — how can that be called good? So the sage holds the left tally and does not press the other side. One with virtue holds the tally; one without virtue holds the ledger. The way of heaven has no favourites — it always gives to the good.

Reading it

The tally splits and each side keeps half; the ledger records who owes what. After great injury, reconciliation that insists on full settlement reopens the wound — holding your half without pressing is the only settlement that does not regenerate the grudge. No favourites is not indifference: the giving follows the one who practised this.

Practice for the week

Pick one settled or half-settled grievance. Hold your tally — stop pressing for the remaining balance this week.
