Nothing Under Heaven Is Softer Than Water
The Text
Nothing under heaven is softer than water, yet nothing better attacks the hard and strong — for nothing can replace it. Weak defeats strong; soft defeats hard; everyone knows this, yet no one practises it. So the sages’ saying: one who takes on the country’s disgrace becomes lord of its altars; one who takes on the country’s misfortune becomes king of the world. True words sound like their opposite.

The water chapter, returning to ch. 8’s subject with the political price list attached. The scandal is not that soft defeats hard — that is known — but that nobody acts on it, because the required payment is shame and misfortune. Taking on disgrace is the entry fee, and the last line warns the whole doctrine will sound backwards.
Take on one piece of the blame that belongs to your team or family this week, without transferring it. Notice who notices.
