Chapter 68

A Good Officer Is Not Violent

The Text

A good officer is not violent; a good fighter does not rage; a good victor does not engage; a good employer of people puts himself below. This is called the virtue of not contending, the strength of using others, the utmost partnership with heaven — the peak of the ancients.

Reading it

Four competencies, each defined by an absence: violence, rage, engagement, elevation. The strongest sentence is the third — the best winner never has to fight, which means winning was arranged before the contest. Partnership with heaven is efficiency, not piety: work that lets the grain of things carry the load.

Practice for the week

Arrange one outcome this week so thoroughly in advance that no confrontation is needed.
