All the World Says My Way Is Great
The Text
All the world says my way is great and beyond comparison. Precisely because it is great, it cannot be compared — if it could, it would long since have become small. I hold three treasures: the first is compassion, the second frugality, the third not daring to be first in the world. Compassion — and one can be brave; frugal — and one can be generous; not daring to be first — and one can be chief of vessels. Now: courage without compassion, generosity without frugality, leading without yielding — death. Compassion wins every battle, holds every fortress: heaven arms with compassion whom it would save.
Reading it
The three treasures are ordered, and the first is load-bearing: compassion is the source of real courage, the other two are its consequences. The chapter names its own failure mode — each treasure stripped of its predecessor produces death. The last line is the book’s closest approach to faith.
Audit one act of courage this week: was compassion in it, or only force? Rebuild if necessary.
