Chapter 44

Your Name or Your Self

The Text

Your name or your self — which is dearer? Your self or your goods — which is worth more? Gain or loss — which is the worse disease? Great love costs greatly; storing much loses heavily. One who knows sufficiency is never disgraced; one who knows where to stop is never endangered — and can endure.

Reading it

Three questions no one answers honestly in public. The chapter’s economics are cold: attachment raises the price of everything, inventory raises the size of every loss. Sufficiency and stopping-point are the only two policies that survive.

Practice for the week

Answer the first question in writing, honestly. Then look at this week’s calendar and check whether you live by the answer.
