Chapter 43

The Softest Thing in the World

The Text

The softest thing in the world rides roughshod over the hardest. What has no substance enters where there is no space. From this I know the use of not-acting. Wordless teaching, the benefit of not-acting — few under heaven can equal them.

Reading it

Water and light: no substance, no plan, yet they get into everything and outlast the stone. Wordless teaching follows — the most durable instruction never arrives as instruction.

Practice for the week

Once this week, teach by doing instead of saying. See whether it travels further than your explanation would have.
