Looked at, It Cannot Be Seen
The Text
Looked at but not seen — it is beyond form. Listened to but not heard — beyond sound. Grasped but not held — beyond touch. These three cannot be fathomed, so they blend into one. Above, it is not bright; below, not dark. Continuous, unnameable, it returns to nothing. This is the form of the formless, the image of nothing. Meet it ahead and there is no head; follow it and there is no back. Hold to the way of old and steer what exists now.
Reading it
A description written from the inside of attention: whatever is doing the looking cannot be seen by itself. The practical part is the last line — you steer the present with the oldest instruction, not the newest one.
Spend ten minutes trying to observe the thing that is observing. Report honestly to yourself what you find.
