Chapter 12

The Five Colors Blind the Eye

The Text

The five colors blind the eye; the five tones deafen the ear; the five tastes dull the tongue. Racing and hunting madden the mind; goods hard to get obstruct a person’s path. The wise provide for the belly, not for the eye. They take the one and leave the other.

Reading it

Not asceticism — a description of saturation. Excess input does not add experience; it removes the ability to have any. The belly/eye distinction is between need and appetite, and only the first one ends.

Practice for the week

Pick one channel of input — feeds, music, shopping tabs — and cut it for a day. Notice what comes back.
