Chapter 76

Born, a Person Is Soft and Supple

The Text

Born, a person is soft and supple; dead, they are stiff and hard. Living things — grass and trees — are soft and pliant; dead, they are withered and dry. The stiff and hard are companions of death; the soft and weak are companions of life. An army that is hard is destroyed; a tree that is hard is felled. The hard and great belong below; the soft and weak belong above.

Reading it

A biology lecture in disguise: suppleness is the measurable signature of being alive, and rigidity is what remains after. The military and botanical lines are the same observation at two scales. Belong above is structural, not social — the living shoot stands on the dead trunk.

Practice for the week

Find the stiffest position you hold. Introduce one degree of give and see if the position survives better.
