Chapter 73

One Dares to Be Bold, One Dares Not

The Text

One dares to be bold and is killed; one dares not to be bold and lives. These two profit and harm — heaven hates what it hates; who knows the reason? The way of heaven does not contend, yet wins; does not speak, yet answers well; is not summoned, yet arrives on time; spreads wide, yet plans well. The net of heaven is vast; its mesh is loose, yet nothing slips through.

Reading it

Boldness and its opposite are weighed honestly — both bring gain and harm, and the chapter admits it cannot explain heaven’s preferences. What it can describe is heaven’s method: winning without contending, answering without speaking, punctuality without summons. The loose net is the image of consequence as physics rather than patrol.

Practice for the week

Identify one consequence you keep escaping on speed. Watch the loose mesh close on its own schedule.
