Chapter 46

When the World Has the Way

The Text

When the world has the way, galloping horses are turned out to fertilize the fields. When the world lacks the way, warhorses breed on the border. No disaster is greater than not knowing sufficiency; no fault greater than desiring gain. So the sufficiency of knowing sufficiency is lasting sufficiency.

Reading it

The state of the nation is read off one image — what the horses are doing. Desire is identified as the whole mechanism of catastrophe, and the remedy is a strange reflexive formula: sufficiency about sufficiency itself, knowing you have enough and knowing that you know.

Practice for the week

List what you already have enough of. Check whether you are still acquiring it.
